THE UKRAINE WAR AND THE ESCALATION OF THE STRATEGIC POSITION OF THE CASPIAN SEA BASIN IN EUROPEAN ENERGY SECURITY

Abstract

The political measures adopted by Ukraine accelerated its accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "NATO" to a large-scale Russian military intervention in February 2022, and as a result of this intervention a large-scale war broke out, its effects extended outside the European continent, prompting the European Union to impose economic sanctions targeting the Russian energy sector, Along with other sectors, and although one of the main objectives behind these sanctions is to reduce dependence on energy supplies coming from Russia, these sanctions had greater repercussions, as the gas crisis deepened in Europe, and this is the reason for the acceleration of European countries to search It looks for new reliable strategic alternatives to avoid future energy security risks. In this regard, the Caspian Sea basin has emerged as a strategic value in the European perception, with its rich deposits of natural gas, and with the presence of Turkey, a NATO member state, which is A transit country between the Caspian Sea countries and Europe. European countries found that this could constitute a strategic opportunity to employ the Caspian Sea gas as a strategic alternative to Russian gas. Pipelines, and to what extent can the natural gas resource in the Caspian Sea basin contribute to strengthening European energy security, and what is the strategic role that Turkey can play in this context?
